The story behind the piece:

When I was 19, I struck out on my own for the first time. Opting out of college, I relied on my self-taught skills as a photographer, designer, & artist to piece together odd freelancing jobs.

Sure, I had achieved independence, but I suddenly realized the enormity of the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be. Being a hustling freelancer is one thing, being an established, reputable artist was QUITE another.

Eventually, I painted this as a memento of that period of my life: embracing the turbulence and the glory of being in my own sea-faring sailboat, while simultaneously seeing how much further I still had to go.
