The first morning of my art residency in France, I got up early to walk around the grounds. The fog was so thick I could barely see 10 yards in front of me and didn’t have any concept of how far I had walked. After about 10 minutes, I looked up and there, through the mist and a mere 15 feet ahead of me was a cow. It was staring intently at me from behind a fence, I had apparently walked far enough to reach the property line. We stood there, looking at each other few minutes, until it slowly turned and walked away.

Shortly after I returned to Pittsburgh, I was hanging out with my sister one night and she started receiving a slew of psychic messages (she has “the gift”). She asked me “does a cow mean anything to you?” I told her the story of that morning in France, and she told me earnestly, “Hannah, you need to paint that cow. I don’t know why, but you do.”

So I painted the cow.
